Job Title: Machinist
Job Description
We are seeking an experienced machinist to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating precision tools, machinery, and equipment to fabricate and shape parts out of metal. This position requires expertise in using lathes, manual milling machines, drill presses, hydraulic presses, band saws, and various cutting tools.
Responsibilities
Fabricate and shape parts such as tools and machine parts out of metal.
Select, align, secure, and remove holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines properly and safely.
Recognize, deploy, and properly use inserts, fixtures, and tooling.
Read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints.
Determine the proper tools required to perform given tasks.
Operate and utilize lifting aids as necessary.
Use gauges and precision measuring instruments to meet tolerance requirements.
Perform daily cleaning and light maintenance tasks on machinery and equipment.
Track parts and jobs in Travelers.
Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
Essential Skills
Experience with heavy industrial lathes, grinders, boring mills, planers, and portable tools.
Skills in turning, drilling, tapping, boring, polishing, and threading machine processes.
Large part machining experience (e.g., ship propeller shafting, ship steering gear).
Experience with forklifts and cranes.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
Familiarity with Bridgeport mills, vertical turning lathes, horizontal boring mills, and grinders.
Experience with hydraulics, calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
Work Environment
The work environment is a job shop that is very labor-intensive, dealing with equipment that can be 40-50 feet in length. The noise level is usually moderate to high. Flexible shift hours are available, with examples for day shifts being 5am-2:30pm, 7am-4:30pm, and 9am-6:30pm. Night shifts run from 11pm-7am. Training is conducted on the day shift for roughly 6-8 months.
